The Tatras form the central, highest and most beautiful section of the Carpathian mountain range and are a natural border between Poland and Slovakia. Although considerably smaller than the Alps they are classified as having an Alpine climate.

The railway skirts the southern edge of the range affording passengers dramatic mountain views, with year-round snow usually visible on several peaks in excess of 2,500 metres above sea level.
