Zakopane, Poland’s highest town has a history dating back to the 17th century when it was one of several villages nestling in the valley between Gubalowka and the Tatras. In the 18th century the area became prosperous due to its steel production and Zakopane became the most important village. Its beautiful wooden parish church was built in 1847 and still stands on Koscieliska Street. In the latter half of the 19th century, the town was “discovered” by the Polish intelligentsia and artists which led to it becoming a fashionable mountain resort.
Today it is renowned for its hiking and skiing, the unspoiled nature and majestic landscapes providing unrivalled views. Stroll past its charming mountain architecture where wooden folk cottages stand adjacent to Art Nouveau houses. Enjoy the quiet streets or visit vibrant Krupowki Street where you can purchase local snacks or craftwork. Visit a museum, exhibition or gallery or simply sit back and enjoy the beautiful scenery from one of the many cafes.
