The Bavarian town of Berchtesgaden, situated near the border with Austria, was originally the seat of a small principality whose rulers built a castle so they could enjoy the hunting and seclusion afforded by St Bartholomew’s peninsula on Lake Königssee.
As with Salzburg, much of the town’s wealth derived from salt and there is still a salt works nearby at Bad Reichenhall. In addition to the royal castle, the historic town centre is home to an abbey church and numerous other sights with the oldest houses to be found along Nonntal. The Deer House, built in 1594 is a very striking building on the square with murals relating stories from the town.
The Cure-takers' park offers an inviting spot to relax and enjoys the stunning mountain scenery.
