Salzburg lies on the banks of the Salzach River and is located at a "crossroads" between east and west, north and south. Salzburg means “salt castle”, a reference to its massive fortress and salt, the white gold mined from the mountains to the South.
Though a small city Salzburg, with its great variety of landscapes and architectural grandeur, has much to offer: from its rich cultural heritage to the beauty of the "Baroque Jewel" that is the old town centre of Salzburg, now designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, born here in 1758 is the city’s most famous son and represents the high point of the classical musical tradition, celebrated today in the world-renowned Salzburg Festival and fostered at the Mozarteum University. Salzburg was also widely used for location filming of the musical, "The Sound of Music".
